's, of course, what president obama campaigned on and he got that as a part of the fiscal cliff deal. moving forward i think you can expect to see president obama hitting the road, taking his message on the road, traveling to different states and making the argument if the debt ceiling isn't increased, the economy will suffer. you hear him say he's not going to negotiate with republicans. what specifically does that mean, we'll have to wait and see because, of course, house speaker john boehner is also taking a very hard line. he has said that he's not going to negotiate with president obama in these one-on-one sessions that we've seen in the past budget battles and he believes he's got leverage with the debt ceiling. but i think the white house will press on whatever package they agree upon to include some new revenues as well as spending cuts, of course, that is the big issue, republicans would like it to all come from spending cuts. so, it's undoubtedly going to be another knockdown, dragdown fight, alex, but it will be interesting to see who is negotiating with whom in the coming rounds

. the future of the u.s. troop residency in afghanistan is front and center this week. president obama expected to meet afghanistan's president, hamid karzai at the white house friday. focus to make sure there's a smooth security handover to the afghan government when nato forces leave afghanistan next year. it's still unclear how many u.s. troops will remain to train afghan security forces and focus on counterterrorism. chris lawrence outlines the proposals for the transition. >> reporter: the options are on the table. at the low end, a little more than 6,000 troops, mostly special operations forces hunting terrorists with a small amount of training for afghan forces. the 10,000 option would still focus on al qaeda, but would add conventional troops to expand afghan training. a 15,000 option would include even more conventional troops to go on limited patrols and give afghans even more support. some experts say, forget that last option. 15,000. >> it's not politically tenable in congress, it's not doable of a budget execution perspective. >> reporter: analyst stephanie sanok worked in baghdad

happening on the same day vice president biden promising to put gun proposals in front of president obama by this coming tuesday, a little more than a month after the shootings in newtown. he and his task force have been hearing from a lot of different sides, including top lobbyists for the national rifle association, the organization coming away none too pleased with the organization. the vice president mentioned some specific recommendations emerging from groups meeting so far. what are they? >> well, number one, anderson, he mentioned it right there at a news conference of sorts with reporters. the reporters weren't allowed to ask questions, but the vice president did give a briefing as to what was going on today. he said that they're going to be looking at universal background checks, and that would sort of replace the system we have now, sort of a hodgepodge system where at gun dealers there are background checks that are conducted but at gun shows there are not. even private sales, if i were to sell you a gun, there would have to be a background check, according to what the vice pre

obama making another cabinet pick. the president will nominate white house chief of staff jack lew to replace timothy geithner as treasury secretary. tell us about jack lew. >> jack lew is the chief of staff known as a tough negotiator, someone who the president has complete trust in. in fact, when he was announced as the white house chief of staff the president talked about the trust that he had in him, talked about how he had taken a part in helping to right the ailing economy. this is also someone who has worked in a couple of administrations as the budget chief in this administration and the clinton administration and helped to cut the 1997 balanced budget deal. so the white house sees him as someone with a lot of experience, ready to take on some of the big challenges over the treasury department as we are facing the so-called mini cliffs, the big one, the debt ceiling, something he will have to deal with right away. >> when is the formal announcement of the nomination expected and another partisan fight down the road? >> very well could be. we have been trying to nail it down
